Is it Lent or Lint?

Ash Wednesday

I was born on Labor Day. For years and years I always thought that Labor Day was a day that women got together and had babies. I mean, it made sense in my life and in my head. I remember being quite disapointed when I found out what Labor Day actually meant, mostly because it meant I was wrong. I also remember when I was little, I used to think that Lent was actually "Lint" and it was a time that we all somehow celebrated balls of fuzz and tiny pieces of lint. But this time, when I found out the real meaning behind the word, I liked Lent much better than Lint.

What does Lent mean for you? What does this season of confession, suffering and repentance translate to in your life? I encourage you to consider the meaning of this season instead of just giving up chocolate or your favorite pop. Perhaps instead of giving something up, you'll consider taking something on, like a longer quiet time in the morning or an additional prayer time throughout the day. Or maybe you'll take the time each morning to read a really awesome blog created for your spiritual journey this lent. Either way, I can guarantee God will be more pleased with your contemplation of Lent and what it means for your spiritual journey than your personal struggle without caffeine for 40 days.

The season of Lent is traditionally when Christians take the time to repent their sins and contemplate their need for Christ and God's grace and sovereignty. What will this Lent season mean to you? How will you bring yourself closer to Christ? How will you make a change in your life to better the lives of those around you?

Scripture: Psalm 51:1-18

Prayer: Lord, Gracious Beautiful One, we thank you for today. We thank you for Ash Wednesday, a day to cover our sinful souls with the ashes of your love. Today is the day we mark ourselves as people who need you. We admit that we are broken. We are unfocused. We are in need of you, Lord. May we feel your consistent love and acceptance as we start this journey together. Amen.
